10:54 am - justin timberlake!!!
|
yo i totally saw him last night for free! benefits of working at penn. sure, i don't have health insurance (since i'm a temp) but at least i got some jt...haaaay.
i have to say that i was a little disappointed. i wanted pyrotechnics and insane special effects. i mean, he had sexy dancers. i guess that counts, sort of. my friend megan and i were theorizing about all the dramatic ways he could enter the stage. i wanted him to erupt from a volcano/get shot out of a cannon/come on stage via boat, magically, with no water. the boat idea, we felt, was very vaginal, appealing to the mostly-girl audience. megan said, "who wouldn't want jt to come out of their vagina?" but that would mean that you were giving birth to him. i am not very into that, personally. but different strokes for different folks. in terms of his entrance, i mean, it was sort of cool. the stage had those secret doors where someone can arise from the middle of it from a moving platform. i feel that i am perhaps not describing it well. but that's okay. it wasn't that interesting.
he has got some fucking sweet dance moves, he is LIQUID. whoa.
i was really disappointed in the sloppy version of "rock your body" that he played, because that song totally rules. i would have liked to see an extended remix version that involved a lot of beatboxing. perhaps maybe multiple beatboxers and breakdancing. that would have been amazing. because really, usually when i hear that song, i can't NOT dance. it's like some other force takes over my body...the force of justin timberlake. ooooow. but i'm sorry to say that the force of jt did not take over on this occasion. bummer. he'll just have to make it up to me later, you know, at home.
i'm pretty sure he wishes he was prince. i can't really blame him, though. who doesn't?

11:53 am - textural textual tension
|
the sun, albeit back only briefly, has recharged my sense of adventure and is nixing my need to hibernate. coupled with seeing the blow last weekend and seeing the guerrilla girls the weekend prior, i am supercharged and super ready to make art again. the plans are in place. i am getting a mactop and it is going to be totally sweet. i have ideas bursting at the seams, and it seems as though i am really ready to make art all the time again. sure, my job is blah and i need to find another one soon, but my life is truly delicious. hopping from one serendipitous occurance to the next, discovering secret pockets of art in this wild city with a thriving diy scene-- i am so fortunate. i love my house. i love my bedroom. i love the adventures i've been encountering. making friends left and right, all the time. this city has been so kind to me, despite the things i hear on the news about the immense amounts of violence that erupt in terrible places, places where violence really has no place--ie, the public schools. not like violence belongs anywhere, but you know. i feel safe where i'm at anyhow. i can call the penn shuttle like it's my own personal taxi service any evening (if i'm chilling in my neighborhood) if it's late and they pick me up and drive me home. so nice. i just need a bike. and a new camera. this year is going to rule so much!

5:18 am - philly
|
|
this is long overdue. i gave up on new york, after looking for a place to live for almost 2 months, which i guess isn't an exorbitantly long period of time, but it felt ridiculously long, and well, after briefly working for sesame street (!) i made my way to the city of brotherly love in search of cheap rent, great art, and a less hurried lifestyle. mission accomplished! i'm at the start of a great adventure in my new house with a garden and a washer and dryer... and a food processor! i can make hummus and pesto now, and i'm very excited about this. yay!

2:18 pm - this is an important message
|
i should have done this sooner, but have left the livejournal world for so long that i kind of forgot about it. i'll do a real update soon, but for now, let's get down to business.
i'm looking for a place to live in brooklyn, hopefully for dec 1. i can afford 750ish a month, preferably less, but can maybe shell out a little more. i want to live somewhere where i feel safe. that's the bottom line.
so if you know of a room opening, give me a holler asap.
i have been working so hard on this but as you know apt hunting in nyc is a motherfucking bitch.
any help would be appreciated, thanks so much!!
ps: kyria, we should see each other soon.

5:22 pm - as soon as i get comfy, sort of
|
i am leaving new york so so soon. i hate the sweaty weather, but i am starting to feel at home here, weirdly. i hope i can pick up where i leave off when i get back. or maybe i'll move away and start all over again, in portland. things are so up in the air.
i am so irritated because now i am living in logistics land. i really don't want to go home before camp, but i think i'm going to have to. i'd like to do it as late as humanly possible. as in leave new york on saturday to go home, go to my cousin's wedding, and then go to camp 2 days later. thomas, i called you. help me help me!

3:39 pm - plans
|
i just got a job working at camp kinderland for the summer. i'm slightly disappointed because i am working with 15 and 16 year olds, being a cit advisor. but it's cool. oh teens. i wanted preteens. tweens, if you will. i can't wait to go to the berkshires and eat wild blueberries and get out of this fucking city.
i am also looking into japan programs for when i get back from camp...ish. i have an interview friday that i may be cancelling, i don't know. (STEPHANIE I'LL LET YOU KNOW.) i just have been hearing terrible things about the nova program but i don't know if i should go with it anyway. i want to get to japan, but maybe that just isn't the way.
when i come back to this country after all of this, i will be a totally new girl, fashion wise and otherwise. in fact, i'll probably look like this:

12:23 am - so, apparently i have to move again?
|
one of my roommates, sam, is moving away (by july 1) to go to grad school, and brandon wants to keep his room open for his own use. they both live upstairs. but brandon wants to raise the rent for all of us. and i mean, his name is on the lease, and whatever, so i guess it makes sense? i just can't afford to stay here. which really, really sucks. do you know how many times i'll have moved this year(ish) now? 5 times. and that is in nyc alone, not including the times i moved in/out of purchase before.
can anyone help me find a stable situation? anyone? please?
i am about to cry.

10:33 pm - this is something old, but important nonetheless.
|
so a few months back, i was approached by a weird, weird man who handed me this flyer, which i feel is too important to not transcribe. especially if just in case i lose it.
Recycling ideas for textiles + hoseiry: worn-out hosiery can be re-used for stuffing in pillows, pin cushions, toys(dolls and animals), coats and jackets, quilts; Other uses include home decorations, such as rugs, curtains, leaves of pipe cleaner + wire flowers, covers for chairs or beds, and to catch lint by attaching one to the washing machine howe, which prevents clogs in the sink. If you have any you don't want, or it's a style you don't wear now, you can give them to a person who is collecting them to distribute to poor and needy people learning how to sew, and are doing Arts and Crafts (making items listed above, to help them to support themselves by selling them, and keeping what they can't afford to buy.) This will also help with our garbage and landfill space problems, so we can use the dumping space for garbage we can't recycle.
You may bring it to 1) Judiths's El buen estilo unisex salon: 56-17 catalapa ave between Myrtle + Seneca aves 10am-7:30 pm, any day except Tuesday telephone:718-366-8963) new laundromat at 609 woodward ave (next to the Egyptian Coptic grocery)Gabby_ ACJ inc. 7 days a week. Robert's phone-718-497-0619 (he lives with his mother)
Robert also needs and is giving help in these ways: A) TO GET HELP 1) If you are a group using clothing to make things, you may ask him, because he keeps it until it's needed. 2) If you are going shoe shopping, and you need help choosing what to buy, ask him to go with you for advice. 3) If you need a new pair of hosiery for you or your daughter(s), but don't have time to go to the store, he can bring it to you. B) HOW ROBERT NEEDS YOUR HELP: 1) He's doing interviews for a survey about all types of hosiery:what was worn before and now, the reasons, likes and dislikes, make an appointment for him to visit. 3) He needs to translate these flyers into other languages, so if you speak or write any besides English, please call. Websites for hard-tofind hosiery 1 tohos.com 2 shopnational.com 3 magnoliahosiery.com 4 stockingstyle.com 5 deandrewdesigns.com (#3+5 may require parental guidance when shopping for teens.)

12:10 am - i got you shooken this bed sty fly girl i came back for brookyln
|
i'm moving to bed sty. don't worry, it's not a scary part of it. it's a duplex (!!!) that is so hot, with a roof deck, and roomates i don't know. but i've met them and they seem pretty awesome? i hope?
it was so funny and awkward, because when i went to see the place multiple people were also seeing it. i felt like we were going to have to fight for it to the death. they chose me out of many possible contestants on the roommate gameshow. i'm so glad i won.
i will be living with another lady, and 2 gentlemen. there will also be a cat, so i'm really, really excited about that. my bedroom is pretty large too, and the rent is the same as i pay now, so that's awesome.
fuck the L train! i will not miss you one bit, you jerk!
attn krysten: if you need a place this summer when you're here, i may have a room for you. there is a little room that has no windows that we are making into an art studio, but we may sublet it, in which case you could totally be our subletter. we'll see how everything pans out.

12:48 pm - for realz this time
|
so i know i've had a lot of posts regarding moving these past 7ish months (as i've been moving a ton) but the last time was for fake considering i didn't end up moving. this time it's for real, i think. my roommate may or may not be going to spain at the end of the month, she doesn't know. but thats kind of an issue considering i would be moving at the end of this month if this were the case, so now i've decided that i'm moving whether or not she is, cuz come on, i can't be homeless.
so an inquiry: are any of you, or cool people you know, planning on moving (in nyc) soonish? who can afford a 500-650 a month rent? (preferably on the lower end of things...) i'm into brooklyn living, but i will do queens again because its earned a place in my heart. even though i REALLY REALLY want to live nearish to the park slope coop, do i ever. cheapest and most delicious eating ever.
so if you know of anyone, reply stat/call me stat.
love, emily
PS ATTN OSCAR MONTOYA! CALL ME TOUT DE SUITE, S'IL VOUS PLAIT!
current mood: anxious, i'm not gonna lie. current music: i hate moving.

9:53 pm - if any of you are impressed by this, i will be surprised
|
i just randomly saw shakira play. (it sucked)
i went to the mtv networks building today to go to this production job networking fair deal for interns past and present.
and me and my friend miriam were walking out of the building, and all of these people were going into a room. she asked what was happening, and they said shakira was playing a for fake new years celebration, since she couldn't make it on actual new years. they let us in because we used to work for nick, and so we went.
it was lame!!!!!!!!!!!
i had to pretend like i was into it, and yell a lot on calculated command. and i was soooo bad at it. if you watch mtv on new years, you may or may not see me. i'm pretty sure you won't as i was in job interview attire, for one, and for two, i could not pretend to be into that song for the life of me.
additionally, since miriam is black, they definately singled her out to be their token, and had her stand up front. and i literally heard some people working on the show say, "get that black guy," when they were talking about this stage area where they were having people all dance up on it. it was funny, because they wanted them to block the window, which faces out to times square--because obviously millions of people were supposed to be out there for the ball dropping.
oh television, you weird me out.
but on a more exciting note, all the reps from the various channels (nickelodeon, mtv, vh1, comedy central, etc) seemed very impressed with me! a lot moreso than the last time i went to one of these deals. i think it's because i have more experience. i hope hope i get something soon... temping is bad news...
